Since the lockdown began the government has been protecting millions of jobs. Now that support is changing and more of us face unemployment or lower income.
Many may need the social security system* for the first time.
In recent months, Citizens Advice Reigate and Banstead has received more requests for help with Universal Credit and employment than anything else. Our trained advisers work with each person to see what benefits they can get and advise on how to apply.
It’s possible to claim Universal Credit in many different situations.
If you’ve lost your job and have no income. If you’re struggling to pay the bills. If your income has dropped but you’re still working. If you have a disability or illness that stops you working. If you have expensive childcare costs. If you’re caring for someone.

NOTE In the lockdown the government introduced a £20 weekly supplement to all universal credit payments. This is due to be phased out in April. With jobs and incomes both expected to be under severe pressure in the coming months, Citizens Advice and others are asking ministers to make the supplement permanent. The Institute of Fiscal Studies says removal of the supplement and other benefit changes will mean the incomes of some of the least well off families will be cut by £1000.
